I was listening to 'Imagine' yesterday. At a protest about digital ID it was on the playlist. Never thought of it like that but I think you are right Miri.
Unlike 95% of the rest of the world (or at least that’s how it feels) I have taken the advice of #MarkAttwood & tried hard to just sit this dance out & try & simply think.
The whole world has piled into Charlie Kirk’s death. Whilst I have absolutely no doubt in my mind - Charlie Kirk is a product of the era of the ‘groomed media celebrity political figure’ - which is always as much about PR as it about substance. However, I’m also remembering how young I was when Anwar Sadat was gunned down as his presidency was drawing to a close - simply because he was the figurehead of a changing order.
Figureheads of changing orders have always occupied a very dangerous jump seat. Or, as someone I used to work with once said: “In my experience, pioneers tend to die young with arrows in their backs”.
As humanity evolves - and we have to remember it is evolving (although I have to grant you - a degree of recidivist knuckle dragging has made a re-appearance thanks to ‘social’ media) we perhaps ought to collectively ask ourselves if we don’t place too much reliance on ‘figureheads’?
Even Substack (lauded by many - erroneously in my view - as a ‘saviour’ platform) is about creating figureheads.
Instead of investing all of our collective energy in figureheads - isn’t a more disruptive (& ultimately effective) strategy better aimed at spreading the right conversations, debates & influencing across a much wider range of people?
Why do you think (during Covid lockdown) we had to stay 2m away from one another?
That’s because inside the 2m boundary you start to feel the energy field of a person.
You have a far greater chance of influencing a person inside a physical 2m boundary than you ever will from a device.
You will never stop the Anwar Sadat & Charlie Kirks. But - ultimately humanity can be a lot more effective & powerful than it currently is trapped (as it is) in a digital goldfish bowl.
That - for me - is the biggest lesson of Sept 10th.
